The Chihuahua is a companion dog whose origin can be traced to Mexico. Similar dogs have also been found as skeletons and depictions in older paintings in Egypt and Malta, so the origin isn't entirely clear-cut.

The breed is small but has a strong pack and owner instinct. Intruders get a real "scolding," only to be expected to cuddle with the dog the next moment. The Chihuahua is an active dog and wants to join in everything from agility to couch lounging.
